Hosea 11

God Yearns over His People

11 When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And ^(A)out of Egypt I ^(B)called My son.
²The more ^[a]^(C)they called them,
The more they went away from ^[b]them;
They kept ^(D)sacrificing to the Baals
And ^(E)burning incense to idols.
³Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk,
^[c]I ^(F)took them in My arms;
But they did not know that I ^(G)healed them.
⁴I ^(H)pulled them along with cords of a man, with ropes of love,
And ^(I)I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and ^(J)fed them.

⁵^[d]They will not return to the land of Egypt;
But Assyria—he will be ^[e]their king
Because they ^(K)refused to return to Me.
⁶And the ^(L)sword will whirl against ^[f]their cities,
And will destroy ^[g]their oracle priests
And ^(M)consume them, because of their ^(N)counsels.
⁷So My people are determined to ^(O)turn from Me.
Though ^[h]they call ^[i]them to the One on high,
None at all exalts Him.

⁸^(P)How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I ^[j]make you like ^(Q)Admah?
How can I treat you like ^(R)Zeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me,
^[k]All My compassions are kindled.
⁹I will ^(S)not carry out My fierce anger;
I will not destroy Ephraim ^(T)again.
For ^(U)I am God and not a man, the ^(V)Holy One in your midst,
And I will not come in ^[l]wrath.
¹⁰They will ^(W)walk after the Lord,
He will ^(X)roar like a lion;
Indeed He will roar,
And His sons will come ^(Y)trembling from the west.
¹¹They will come trembling like birds from ^(Z)Egypt,
And like ^(AA)doves from the land of ^(AB)Assyria;
And I will ^(AC)settle them in their houses, declares the Lord.

¹²^[m]Ephraim surrounds Me with ^(AD)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
^[n]Judah is still unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.

The Pharisees Rebuked

²²^(A)Then a ^(B)demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to speak was brought to ^[a]Jesus, and He healed him so that the man who was unable to speak talked and ^[b]could see. ²³And all the crowds were amazed and were saying, “This man cannot be the ^(C)Son of David, can he?” ²⁴But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man ^(D)casts out demons only by ^[c]Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.”

²⁵^(E)And ^(F)knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and no city or house divided against itself will stand. ²⁶And if ^(G)Satan is casting out Satan, he ^[d]has become divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? ²⁷And if ^(H)by ^[e]Beelzebul I cast out the demons, ^(I)by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. ²⁸But ^(J)if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. ²⁹Or, how can anyone enter the strong man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.

The Unpardonable Sin

³⁰^(K)The one who is not with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters.

³¹“^(L)Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. ³²^(M)And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in ^(N)this age or in the age to come.

Words Reveal Character

³³“Either ^[f]assume the tree to be good as well as its fruit good, or ^[g]assume the tree to be bad as well as its fruit bad; for ^(O)the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴^(P)You ^[h]offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, express any good things? ^(Q)For the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart. ³⁵^(R)The good person brings out of his good treasure good things; and the evil person brings out of his evil treasure evil things. ³⁶But I tell you that for every ^[i]careless word that people ^[j]speak, they will give an account of it on the ^(S)day of judgment. ³⁷For ^[k]by your words you will be justified, and ^[l]by your words you will be condemned.”

The Desire for Signs

³⁸Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, ^(T)we want to see a ^[m]sign from You.” ³⁹But He answered and said to them, “^(U)An evil and adulterous generation craves a ^[n]sign; and so no ^[o]sign will be given to it except the ^[p]sign of Jonah the prophet; ⁴⁰for just as ^(V)Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will ^(W)the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for ^(X)three days and three nights. ⁴¹^(Y)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because ^(Z)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something ^(AA)greater than Jonah is here. ⁴²^(AB)The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something ^(AC)greater than Solomon is here.

⁴³“^(AD)Now when the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. ⁴⁴Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. ⁴⁵Then it goes and brings along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they come in and live there; and ^(AE)the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”

Ephraim Reminded

12 ^[a]Ephraim feeds on ^(A)wind,
And pursues the ^(B)east wind continually;
He multiplies lies and violence.
Moreover, ^[b]he makes a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is brought to Egypt.
²The Lord also has a ^(C)case against Judah,
And will punish Jacob ^(D)according to his ways;
He will repay him according to his deeds.
³In the womb he ^(E)took his brother by the heel,
And in his mature strength he ^(F)contended with God.
⁴Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and ^(G)implored His favor.
He found Him at ^(H)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
⁵And the Lord, the God of armies,
The Lord is His ^[c]^(I)name.
⁶So as for you, ^(J)return to your God,
^(K)Maintain ^[d]kindness and justice,
And ^(L)wait for your God continually.
⁷A ^[e]merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent ^(M)balances,
Loves to exploit.
⁸And Ephraim said, “I have certainly become ^(N)rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
^(O)No wrongdoing, which would be sin.”
⁹But I have been the Lord your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you ^(P)live in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
¹⁰I have also spoken to the ^(Q)prophets,
And I ^[f]provided many visions,
And through the prophets I spoke in ^(R)parables.
¹¹Is there injustice in Gilead?
Certainly they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,
Yes, ^(S)their altars are like stone heaps
Beside the furrows of a field.

¹²Now ^(T)Jacob fled to the ^[g]land of Aram,
And ^(U)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
¹³But by a ^(V)prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was protected.
¹⁴^(W)Ephraim has provoked God to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his ^(X)guilt for bloodshed on him
And bring his ^(Y)disgrace back to him.

²To ^(E)the church of God which is in ^(F)Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, ^[b]saints ^(G)by calling, with all who in every place ^(H)call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

³^(I)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴^(J)I thank ^[c]my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, ⁵that in everything you were ^(K)enriched in Him, in all ^(L)speech and ^(M)all knowledge, ⁶just as ^(N)the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed ^[d]in you, ⁷so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you eagerly ^(O)await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, ⁸^(P)who will also ^[e]confirm you to the end, blameless on ^(Q)the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹^(R)God is faithful, through whom you were ^(S)called into ^(T)fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Wisdom of God

¹⁸For the word of the cross is ^(AI)foolishness to ^(AJ)those who ^[u]are perishing, but to us who ^[v]are being saved it is ^(AK)the power of God. ¹⁹For it is written:

“^(AL)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And the understanding of those who have understanding, I will confound.”

²⁰^(AM)Where is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of ^(AN)this age? Has God not ^(AO)made foolish the wisdom of ^(AP)the world? ²¹For since in the wisdom of God ^(AQ)the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, ^(AR)God ^[w]was pleased through the ^(AS)foolishness of the ^[x]message preached to ^(AT)save those who believe. ²²For indeed ^(AU)Jews ask for ^[y]signs and Greeks search for wisdom; ²³but we preach ^[z]^(AV)Christ crucified, ^(AW)to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles ^(AX)foolishness, ²⁴but to those who are ^(AY)the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ ^(AZ)the power of God and ^(BA)the wisdom of God. ²⁵For the ^(BB)foolishness of God is wiser than mankind, and ^(BC)the weakness of God is stronger than mankind.
